WASHINGTON, June 15 -- 2010 U.S. figure skating champion Rachel Flatt was fined on Wednesday for failing to disclose a stress fracture that hindered her performance at the World Championships in April.
Flatt only managed a 12th-finish at the world championships in Moscow and after the competition she said she had been diagnosed a week before with a stress fracture in her right tibia.
If Flatt informed U.S. Figure Skating officials of the injury, they could have brought in alternate Mirai Nagasu to compete.
Instead, Flatt's poor finish may have cost the United States a third women's berth at next year's world championships, with berths at future championships awarded based on a country's performance in each discipline.
The amount of Flatt's fine was not disclosed.
