BUDAPEST, Aug. 6 -- On the closing day of the World Finswimming Championships in Szeged, Hungary on Saturday, Christoph Oefner of Germany and Marina Voronina of Russia won the meet's final two open-water long distance events.
Oefner won the men's 20 kilometer event in 3 hours 5 minutes 57.33 seconds. Simone Mallegni of Italy took silver (3 hours 7 minutes 10.03 seconds), while Christain Hoera of Germany won bronze (3 hours 8 minutes 9.72 seconds).
The women's 20 kilometer race was won by Voronina in 3 hours 17 minutes 40.38 seconds. Sofya Eremtcova of Russia won silver (3 hours 19 minutes 52.68 seconds), and Tetiana Kransogor of Ukraine took bronze (3 hours 20 minutes 33.44 seconds).
Voronina's victory took Russia's gold medal tally in the open-water events to five.
After the end of the meet, Achille Ferrero, president of the World Finswimming Association (CMAS), said that the competition was "one of the most successful competitions of all time, from both an organization and world records point of view."
