WASHINGTON, Aug. 23 -- Australian tennis player Lleyton Hewitt withdrew from the US Open on Tuesday due to a foot injury.
The 30-year-old, winner of the US Open in 2001, was bothered by the foot problem the whole summer.
Hewitt underwent surgery on his foot in the spring and has never returned to court pain free. He has not reached the second week of a major since Wimbledon Open in 2009.
The Aussie was knocked out in the first round at the ATP Winston-Salem event Monday and said he would need "a lot of practise and a lot of treatment" before the start of the season's final major on Monday.
