NEW YORK, Sept. 8 -- The US Open's closing match, the men's singles final, will be postponed to Monday, one day late than the schedule, for the fourth straight year for rain delay.
The rain had forced all matches canceled on Tuesday and only 15 playing was allowed on Wednesday. Assuming the tournament hurries up to catch up the schedule, there will be four matches in four days for players like defending champion Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Andy Murray and John Isner, who played fourth round on Thursday if any of them reach the final.
The US Open, after hearing criticism from Roddick and Nadal, announced that the men's final will now be Monday at 11 a.m. local time. This is the fourth year in a row the men's final will end a day late.
The rest of the remaining schedule has changed as well.
Friday will have the two remaining men's quarterfinal matches staging Nadal against Roddick and fourth-seeded Andy Murray against a second American, John Isner.
The women's semifinals, which are usually on Friday, are now scheduled for Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.. Serena Williams will face Caroline Wozniacki in one, and Samantha Stosur goes up against Angelique Kerber in the other. The women's final will be on Sunday at 11 a.m..
