RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 2 -- After Flamengo's 2-1 win on the road against Sao Paulo on Sunday, the team's head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo expressed his delight and optimism for a run at this year's Brazilian Championship title.
According to Luxemburgo, the team has all the right conditions to fight for this year's title. The coach was not shy to give himself credit for the team's current position despite its winless streak.
The coach attributes his confidence, his quality of not being a quitter and his leadership skills to Flamengo's current standing despite a drop in productivity.
The coach also described the peace-of-mind of having the club's president, Patricia Amorim, fully backing the coach despite the team's ups and downs.
Flamengo recently overcame a 10-game winless streak and has now produced its second consecutive victory. After the 27th round of the competition, Flamengo has a record of 11 wins, 11 draws and 5 losses, good enough for sixth place with 44 points.
The team remains behind fifth place Fluminense with 44 points, fourth place Botafogo with 45 points, third place Sao Paulo with 46 points, second place Corinthians with 48 points and first place Vasco da Gama with 50 points.
Luxemburgo and Flamengo now focus their attention to cross-town rival Fluminense. Both teams will meet on Oct. 9 in the 28th round of the tournament in a vital match for approximation to the leaders of the competition. Only 11 round remain in this year's tournament.
