说明： cannot but (后面接原形动词) 是习语， 意为"不得不". cannot help (avoid,forbear) (后面接动名词) 也是这个意思. "cannot help + 动名词" 和 "cannot help but +原形动词" 是美国口语， 意为都一样为"不得不". 例： Bertha cannot help beating her up. =Bertha cannot help but beat her up. (伯莎不得不揍她一顿。) 若用 can 代替例句中的 cannot,即Kirt can but sell his car. 句意不是"柯克可以卖东西，但不能卖掉他的汽车." 而是"柯克只能卖掉他的汽车". canbut = can only ("只能")

误译： 诺兰不能再反对那种建议。

原意： 诺兰百分之百反对那种建议。

说明： cannot ... more 意为"百分之百地","完完全全地"。

9. cannot ... too

例句： We cannot be too patient with others。

误译： 我们对别人不能有太大的耐性。

原意： 我们对别人无论有怎样大的耐性都不过分。

说明： cannot ... too 为习语， 意为"无论怎样.....。也不过分". 若上例改成 We should not be too patient with them. 则就变成相反的意思： 我们对他们不应太过忍耐。
