表示类别和整体的形容词
 
一、the+adj.表示一类人
有的形容词前加上the可表示一类人，如the living (活着的人), the dead(死了的人), the young (年青人), the old (老年人), the poor (穷人), the rich (富人), the wounded(伤员), the sick (病人), the blind(盲人)等，作主语时，谓语动词要用复数。如：http://yingyu.chazidian.com
The poor starve and the rich feast.穷人挨饿,富人吃喝。
二、the+adj.表示某国人
在以-sh或-ch结尾的表示民族的形容词前加the可表示指这个民族的整体，如the British (英国人), the English (英格兰人), the Irish (爱尔兰人), the Spanish (西班牙), the Welsh (威尔士), the French (法国人), the Dutch (荷兰人)等等，作主语时，谓语动词也要用复数。如(from www.yygrammar)：
The English have a wonderful sense of humour. 英国人有很强的幽默感。
三、the+adj.表示一类事
常见的表示一类事物的有the latest (最新消息), the best (最好的事), the new (新生事物), the old (旧事物), the unreal (不真实的事), the unknown (未知事物), the unexpected(出乎意料的事), the exciting (令人兴奋的事), the lovely (美好的事物)等，作主语时，谓语动词用单数。如：
The best (thing) is yet to come. 好事就要来临。
