　　一位人类学家和一组研究人员揭示了某些鲜为人知的英国酒吧文化。人们首先遇到的困难是从买酒开始的。（starting with the difficulty of getting a drink）大多数英国酒吧都没有酒保，（waiters）你得到吧台（the bar）去买酒。这听上去似乎让人觉得不方便，可却有它深刻的内涵。（a hidden purpose）

　　在因其冷漠而出名的英国社会里，酒吧文化的形成是为了促进社会交往。（Pub culture is designed to promote sociability in a society known for its reserve.）排队的时候可以和其它等待买酒的人交谈。（Standing at the bar for service allows you to chat with others waiting to be served.）在英伦诸岛上，（in the British Isles）和陌生人亲切地交谈被认为是完全适宜的正常行为的唯一场所可能就是吧台了。

　　Reserve做动词用，常用的意思是预订，比如你打算定一个两人的桌子，就可以说：Id like to reserve a table for two.还有，在许多网页的最下端，都有all rights reserve的字样，这里的意思是保留版权。

　　在这段中，reserve用作名词，意思是冷淡、克制等，一个词，恰到好处地概括了英国人的性格特点。举个例子：

　　He spoke with reserve.

　　他说话谨慎。
