7. Adult Education
After complaining about many aspects of American life, a 40-year-old woman from Hong Kong concluded, But where else could someone my age go back to school and get a degree in social work? Here you can change your whole life, start a new business, do what you really want to do.
So at least to this person, school requirements werent inhibiting. And to millions of others, adult education is the path to a new career, or if not to a new career, to a new outlook. Schools generally encourage the older person who wants to start anew, and besides regular classes, schedule evening classes in special programs. Today there are so many people of retirement age in college that it is no longer remarkable.
8. Moral Relativism in American
Improving American education requires not doing new things but doing some good old things. At the time of our nations founding, Thomas Jefferson listed the requirements for a sound education in the Report of the Commissioners for the University of Virginia. In this landmark statement on American education, Jefferson wrote of the importance of education and writing, and of reading history, and geography. But he also emphasized the need to instruct the mass of our citizens in these, their rights, interests, and duties, as men and citizens. Jefferson believed education should aim at the improvement of both ones morals and faculties. That has been the dominant view of the aims of American education for over two centuries. But a number of changes, most of them unsound, have diverted schools from these great pursuits. And the story of the loss of the schools original moral mission explains a great deal.
