Most of us are guilty of laughing inappropriately at one time or another, such as when we see someone fall down and get hurt or when were relaying bad news. And although we know theres nothing funny about Grandmas death, we may still find ourselves trying to hold back fits of laughter at her funeral. Neuroscientist Sophie Scott explains its used most often as a method of social bonding—to let people know that we like them, we agree with them, or were in the same group. Knowing that, we shouldnt feel so horrified if our neighbor lets out a chuckle while explaining how he ran over our dog.
