They tried hard to be accepted into these cliques. The only problem was, they stood out like sore thumbs. Patty was brainy and wore glasses, and Lauren was overweight and had braces. Thankfully, two other‘‘square pegs”accepted them(她们努力地尝试进入这些很“酷”的小团体。 顺着这个线索再搜索一下,很快找到了答案:原来square peg来自习语square peg in a round hole。
从字面意思引申开去,square peg in around hole用来描述跟周围的人合不来、无法融入自己所处团体的人,它的变种round peg in a square hole也是一样的意思。 Most Chinese will have a hard time adjusting to the new life when theyf irst arrive in the U.S. The langruage is different, the food is differenr.the culture is different, and the list g oes on. If you feel like a squarc peg in a round holc. it's only natural. Good thing is, most Americans are veryfriendly .As long as you try hard enough ,you will fit in sooner or later.(大多数中国人刚到美国的时候都觉得很难适应新生活。 Ruth: I have made up my mind .I am quiting.(我决定了,我要辞职)Adam: Mind telling me why?(介意告诉我原因吗?)
