Formorethan20years,scientistshavesuggestedthathighselfesteem(自尊)isthekeytosuccess.Now,newresearchshowsthatfocusingjustonbuildingselfesteemmaynotbehelpful.Insomecases,havinghighselfesteemcanbringbadresultsifitmakesyoulesslikeableormoreupsetwhenyoufailatsomething.
“Forgetaboutselfesteem,”saysJenniferCrocker,apsychologist(心理学家)attheUniversityofMichigan,US,“It’snottheimportantthing.”

Crocker’sadvicemaysoundabitstrangebecauseitisgoodtofeelgoodaboutyourself.
Studiesshowthatpeoplewithhighselfesteemarelesslikelytobedepressed,anxious,shy,orlonelythanthosewithlowselfesteem.
But,afterreviewingabout18,000studiesonselfesteem,RoyBaumeister,apsychologistatFloridaStateUniversity,hasfoundthatbuildingupyourselfesteemwillnotnecessarilymakeyouabetterperson.
Hebelievesthatviolentandwicked(邪恶的)peopleoftenhavethehighestselfesteemofall.Healsosaid:“There’snoevidencethatkidswithhighselfesteemdobetterinschool.”
Problems
Alltypesofpeoplehaveproblems.Peoplewithhighselfesteemcanhavebigegos(自我)thatcanmakethemlesslikeabletotheirpeers(同龄人),saidKathleenVohs,apsychologyprofessoratColumbiaUniversity.
