Parents and coaches obviously feel the need to push their children to do their best. But is that sometimes too much? A coach named Marilyn in Detroit says she recently was at an indoor game where one of her players hit the side board. The
player’s father immediately yelled at him for playing poorly, rather than asking how he was feeling. such situations are common.
When a child gets pressured from an adult, it can affect his or her confidence. They start feeling like they will never be good enough to satisfy their parents, and start actually believing they’re not good players. Between the ages 8 and 18, children rely on adults to tell them what’s right and wrong. But if all they’re getting is negative feedback, how do they know what they’re doing right?
Everyone knows that if you want to get better at something, you have to practice and practice. But recently studies from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that too much training can lead to overuse injuries. In some cases, parents and coaches do in fact acknowledge their kids injuries, but then decide to do nothing about it. This is mostly because their kid is the “star player” and the team “can’t afford” to play without him or her.
46. The general idea of the passage is ____________.
A. Coaches and parents shouldn’t continue to put too much pressure on the players
B. Most players worry about them making their parents disappointed.
