Pinkham Notch, N.H., tops the list from the Northeast Regional Climate Center with a 95 percent probability of an inch or more of snow on the ground on Dec. 25. New York City gets a 12 percent chance of a white Christmas.

　　Cornell Climatologist Jessica Rennells said today the predictions are based on a 50-year average. With above-normal temperatures expected to continue in the Northeast for the next week or two, Rennells says the real odds（可能性）of a snowy holiday are likely lower than the long-term trend would suggest.

　　But such odds are based on historical precedent, not forecasts, which state climatologist Dave Robinson says make the possibility of a white Christmas even more remote, since above-average temperatures are expected to sweep the Garden State over the next two weeks. Still, there's a chance that enough cold air could sneak（悄悄行动）through to produce a quick burst of snow, Robinson said."But I would just put that in the 'hope springs permanent type," he said.

　　Robinson said there's typically a 20 percent chance of snow on the ground Christmas Day in the Newark-New Brunswick region of the state, but just a 5 percent chance of snow actually falling on the day, based on historical trends.
