RP is a condition where the lightsensing cells produce the wrong amount of protein, leading to a gradual loss of function which results in total blindness. It affects up to 20,000 people in Britain.
The implant carries out the normal function of the damaged cells, using 1,500 electrodes(电极)to change light into electrical impulses(电路脉冲)which are passed up the nerve into the brain.Previous eye implants have relied on cameras, rather than the eye itself,to take in light before transmitting it into electrical signals.
Trials of the implant began in Germany six years ago and the first two British patients had the devices fitted in eighthour operations last month.
Robin Millar,60,from London,is one of the patients who are testing the chip.He said,“Since switching on the device I am able to detect light and distinguish the outlines of certain objects which are encouraging signs.I have even dreamt in very vivid
colour for the first time in 25 years so a part of my brain which had gone to sleep has woken up.I feel this is incredibly promising for future research and I’m happy to be contributing to the chip.”
3.Which is the RIGHT order that the following things work in when the microchip functions?
A.Cameras—light—nerves—the brain.
B.Light—electrical impulses—nerves—the brain.
C.Electrical impulses—cameras—nerves—the brain.
