A 53­year­old woman was walking down the street on Manhattan's Upper West Side four years ago when something lying in a pile of trash on the street caught her eye. It turned out to be a painting，which she was sure didn't belong there，although she was far from an art critic. Gibson took it home and hung it on a wall. “It was huge and very brightly colored，very abstract，but you could make out three figures and it was just very powerful，” she said.

　　Her research led her to a website and a shocking discovery：the painting was a 1970 effort—called Three People—by a Mexican artist named Rufino Tamayo，who died in 1991 and，as so often happens in the art world，the value of his work had skyrocketed. It is now estimated to be worth up to $1 million.

　　Authorities at Sotheby's auction house say that the painting was stolen from their warehouse in 1987！Ten years before，a Houston man purchased it for $55,000 as a gift for his wife. The owners even offered a $15,000 reward，but for years，no one knew what had happened to it，until Gibson walked down that street.

　　In addition to an unknown percentage of the sale of the painting by its owner，Gibson will also receive the $15,000 reward. Gibson was truly in the right place at the right time. A doorman who saw her pick up the painting recalls that garbage collectors came by the area just 20 minutes after she found it.
