Mobile phones and microblogs may be killing off our old etiquette(礼仪).This is probably why BBC broadcaster Sir Jimmy Young called for “a return to politeness” on the airwaves. Many experts responded.
Their apparent goal, reports The New York Times,is “to help members of Generation Y(referring to people born in the 1980s and the early 1990s) with navigate thorny,tech-age minefields(雷区)”.
First of all, they highlighted the manners of using mobile phones. It is never OK to leave your mobile phone on the dinner table. If you must go out and you expect a call, first inform your host or hostess of the situation and keep your mobile phone on “Vibrate” mode and in your pocket or on your lap.In the event that it does ring, excuse yourself from the table—don’t explain why, just simply say “excuse me”— and leave the dining room before answering the call.
Another focus is the proper use of “netiquette”:how to use emoticons(表情符号)in e-mails, how to be cautious when posting on someone’s microblog and how to manage multiple online chats.
“We’re living in an age of anxiety about the near-constant change and confusion in technology and social values,”Steven Petrow told The New York Times.Petrow is an author of five etiquette books, including Mind Your Digital Manners:Navigating Life in an Age Without Rules.
