China never got Beatle Mania.
Fifty years ago, when the rest of the world fell into a decades-long frenzy over the Fab Four, one of the greatest sensations in music history left China untouched. Isolated and in the throes of the Cultural Revolution, the country never saw the hysterical fans, the fainting, the weeping, the Ed Sullivan Show performances; no one was humming 'She Loves You' or hankering to grow their hair into a mop top.
Fast-forward to the present, and it's understandable that a driver, upon hearing that the Beijing Beatles were performing in China's capital one night, turned to his employer and earnestly asked, 'Is that really the Beatles?'
This wasn't the first time someone has confused the popular tribute band with the original. The Beijing Beatles, who have been performing throughout China since April 2011, often cause a stir when playing in the country's second-tier cities such as Hefei, Tianjin and Nanjing.
