On October 29th, Peking University’s Center for Market and Media Studies released a report on the life of diaosi, a popular Chinese Internet term that means unprivileged losers, the first of its kind in China. According to the report, the average monthly wage of a diaosi is 2917.7 yuan. 72.3 percent of diaosi feel they are living an unhappy life. What diaosi concern most is their family. They hand in 1070.7 yuan to their parents each month in average. In terms of industries, Diaosi Index is the highest in agriculture and forestry, but relatively low in marketing/public relations/media,health and fitness, finance/banking/investment/funds/securities。

The report defines diaosi as workers who have a personal saving of RMB100,000 or less, no home or ability to buy their own home without financial help. Of the over 210 thousand respondents, 62.2% believe they are diaosi. Those people, aged mainly between 21 and 30 years old, are the vast employees at the grassroots level. Their average monthly wage is RMB 2917.7, while the figure is 5793 in Beijing according to the official statistics。
