BEIJING, April 17 -- The future of Chinese international footballer Yu Hanchao remains unclear after he was sacked by Chinese Super League (CSL) champions Guangzhou Evergrande for altering his car's license plate, Chinese media reported on Friday.
Yu is currently in police custody, with several CSL clubs, including his hometown side Dalian FC, reportedly willing to sign the winger if he is released from his Evergrande contract, which expires next year.
Evergrande's legal team is said to be dealing with Yu's contractual issues after he serves his 15-day police detention, according ton a report by the Guangzhou-based Yangcheng Evening News.
Regardless of whether his contract is terminated, it is certain that the winger will not be able to continue playing for Evergrande, the report added.
Footage emerged on the internet on Tuesday evening allegedly showing Yu tampering with his car's license plate.
Following the police confirmation of Yu's offence that evening, Guangzhou Evergrande announced that the 33-year-old had been sacked.
His dismissal sparked outrage from several people connected with Dalian FC, which Yu left in 2017 to join Evergrande.
Dalian striker Zhu Ting, who called Yu a player better than most Chinese footballers, said the 59-cap winger should have been given a chance to redeem himself.
"We have better ways to help a person grow other than destroy him for irrelevant mistakes," Zhu said.
