BUENOS AIRES, July 6 -- Chilean soccer midfielder Matias Fernandez's injury in the right leg is not severe, doctor of the Chilean national soccer team Luis Maya said on Wednesday.
Fernandez was injured on Monday during a match against Mexico at the America's Cup held in Argentina, however, after the medical tests made on Tuesday morning, Maya said that fortunately the results were "very favorable."
"We cannot see a grave injury. There is not a sprain, there is not hematoma, and we will continue observing him and his clinic evolution," Maya said.
However, "if the match against Uruguay were played today, he could not play," he said.
Due to the injury, still it is not clear whether Fernandez will be able to play on Friday against Uruguay.
On Monday, Fernandez was not able to end the match against Mexico which ended 2-1, being Chile the winner.
Fernandez had to left the match at the middle of the second half, and the coaches feared he would not be able to continue playing the tournament.
Maya told the press that Fernandez will get more medical tests on Thursday, but they expect that by "Friday whether Jorge Valdivia (who is also injured) or Fernandez could play" against Uruguay.
