THE HAGUE, Oct. 3 -- Maarten Stekelenburg has withdrawn from the Dutch squad for their forthcoming Euro 2017 qualifiers against Moldova and Sweden.
Medical research on Monday in Amsterdam revealed that the AS Roma goalie has not recovered enough from the head injury he suffered two weeks ago in the Serie A match against Internazionale. The Dutchman was knocked unconscious in a clash with Inter defender Lucio and has not played for Roma since.
Stekelenburg complained of some minor headaches in the past days and is not willing to take any risk. He now returns to Italy to continue his recovery.
Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk did not call up a replacement and the Dutch squad now consists of 22 players. Michel Vorm of Swansea City will probably replace Stekelenburg with Tim Krul of Newcastle United as second choice.
'Oranje' hosts Moldova on October 7 in Rotterdam and meets Sweden on October 11 in Solna. The Dutch are already sure of qualifying for the European Championships.
