Chen Guangcheng, the blind Chinese human rights lawyer, caused a serious diplomatic incident back in April when he escaped his Chinese captors and sought the protection of the US embassy in Beijing. Now he's in the United States, living the life of an exile. And after meetings in the US Congress, he said guarantees given him by the Chinese government before he left China have not been adhered to. Mr Chen has many supervisors in the US Congress, but like many exiled Chinese dissidents before him, he may find it hard to effect the change he seeks back in his own country.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned the visiting American Defense Secretary Leon Panetta that efforts to persuade Iran to stop developing nuclear weapons are not working. Mr Netanyahu said Iran believed the international community did not have the will to stop its nuclear program and that this must change because time was running out to resolve the issue peacefully.
