LONDON, Jan. 14 -- David Wagner on Monday left Premier League strugglers Huddersfield Town by mutual consent, the club has confirmed.
The German leaves after a run of nine games without a win has left the club bottom of the league table, 8 points from safety.
Wagner joined Huddersfield in November 2017 with the club struggling in the Championship (second tier of English football) and led them to promotion to the Premier League in 2017 before keeping them in the top-flight last season.
Huddersfield Chairman Dean Hoyle told the press he had not wanted Wagner to leave.
"I had no intention of sacking David this season...... subsequently David, being the great man he is, came to us and made it clear that he needs a break from the rigors of football management.
"After a long discussion we all felt that David staying at the club until the end of the season was best, but we've kept discussions open and we all now feel that the time is right to part ways,"
"It's a very sad day, but now we have to look to the future. That's what football and our immediate situation demands," said Hoyle, who added that former club captain, and U-23's coach, Mark Hudson will direct Huddersfield in their next game, which is against Manchester City.
