Mr. Toyoda's approach carries risks, not least of which is the possibility of the type of high-speed accident that killed Toyota's chief test car driver in 2010. The company says he hasn't been in a competitive race since then - a decision prompted in part by pressure from Toyota's board, according to a person familiar with the matter. But he hasn't quit his habit of racing solo at top speeds on closed courses.
