英国首相特雷莎·梅领导的保守党在日前举行的大选(general election)中失去议会多数党地位(lose the party's majority in the House of Commons)后，外界一度猜测，英国方面可能会选择推迟脱欧谈判(delay negotiations on Brexit)。15日下午，欧盟委员会负责脱欧谈判(Brexit talks, talks on Britain's exit from the EU)的首席代表米歇尔·巴尼耶与英国脱欧大臣(Brexit secretary)戴维·戴维斯同意于19日正式启动英国脱欧谈判。

据悉，戴维斯19日将前往欧盟总部(EU headquarters)所在地布鲁塞尔会晤巴尼耶，但首轮谈判将持续多长时间仍尚未可知。英国与欧盟的新关系谈判(discussions about Britain's new relationship with the EU)预计将持续两年。据媒体披露，戴维斯下周稍晚还将向参加欧盟峰会(EU summit)的各国领导人通报脱欧谈判的进程。22-23日，欧盟峰会将在布鲁塞尔举行，脱欧谈判也将是欧盟首脑(EU leaders)关注的焦点。
