BERLIN, June 29 -- Norway craved out a hard-earned 1-0 victory over 2008 Africa champion Equatorial Guinea thanks to the late decider by striker Emilie Haavi in group D opener of the women's World Cup on Wednesday.
Norway started with a wakening call for Equatorial Guinea when striker Emilie Haavi rattled the left post with only two minutes into the match. As the match progressed, Norway handed over control to Equatorial Guinea that focused on long-range efforts.
After the break, Equatorial Guinea remained active and willing but they were punished by Norway for their poor chance conversion as striker Haavi netted the winner from close distance as she capitalized from an error by Equatorial Guineas defence to seal the win six minutes before final whistle.
Norway faces favourite Brazil whilst Equatorial Guinea meets Australia on the next match day.
