At issue are two types of encoding. The first is end-to-end encryption, which Apple uses in itsiMessage system and FaceTime, the video conversation system. Companies like Open WhisperSystems, the maker of Signal, and WhatsApp have adopted such encryption for stand-aloneapps, which are of particular concern to counterterrorism investigators.
