辽参goto the devil等于goto hell，即“下地狱，不得好死”的意思。当时的拓荒者代表人物Davy Crockett曾经三次当选众议院议员，最后在和墨西哥对抗的战争中英勇献身。由于这位家喻户晓的英雄人物也经常使用bark up the wrong tree.这个短语就通过各种资讯报道和相关书籍进一步流行起来。

1833年的Sketches and Eccentricities of Colonel David Crockett of West Tennessee中有这样一例： I told him that be remember me of meanest thing on God's earth .an old coon dog.barking up the wrong tree .(我跟他说，他让我想起了这世上最凶暴的东西：一只老黑狗，对着错误的树乱叫。)

1834年的A Narrahve of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee又有一例：I beaan to think l was barking up the wrong tree32 没意识到他找错了门。) 不怕大家见笑，我也很喜欢用bark up the wrong tree，但是我的理由比较“邪恶”：碰到不讲道理的人，这个短语既可以避免脏话，又间接地骂了对方(“你像狗一样乱叫”)，相当解气。不过话又要说回来，“找错门”本来就不是什么好事，它一向是带有几分贬义色彩的。

使用这个短语的人大多数情况下不外乎有这两种潜台词：1.别打你的如意算盘，想得美;2.别像疯狗一样乱咬人，要吵架找别人去。
