From its inception in 1917, the college has been all-male, until its board voted, in fall 2011, that it would begin accepting female students in the summer of 2013.

Scholars at Deep Springs study philosophy and international relations – but they also learn how to skin sheep and herd cattle. Students must spend at least 20 hours a week doing "labour" to keep the college-cum-ranch ticking over: cooking, cleaning, gardening, milking cows, herding cattle, moving hay, butchering chickens, wiring cables, sorting library books, fixing vehicles.

在深泉学院就读，学生们不仅需要学习哲学和国际关系，还需要学习如何牧羊放牛。学生们每周至少要花20个小时劳动才能保证学校正常运作：做饭、清扫、园艺、挤奶、放牛、种草、杀鸡、装电线、整理图书馆书籍和修车等。
