Beijing is the least affordable place to rent in the world, according to a new report from the Global Cities Business Alliance.

The London-based not-for-profit organisation compared major business cities around the world to assess the scale of the housing crisis in each, looking at the average monthly rental cost and the average annual share of net earnings from 2017.

Renters in Beijing spend an average of 550 pounds ($789) on rent each month, which is a staggering 122.9% of the average person's salary.

Residents of Abu Dhabi — the second most expensive city in the ranking — pay a hefty 1,714 pounds($2,460), or 69.5% of their salary, on rent. In third place, Hong Kong costs renters 1,345 pounds($1,930), which eats up 64% of their monthly paycheque.
