Last week Honda, Japan’s third-largest carmaker by sales, cited a drop in sales in China as it cut its full-year forecast by 20 per cent. Nissan, which reports earnings today, is likely to miss its sales and profit targets as well, Carlos Ghosn, chief executive, suggested in an interview with the Financial Times last week.

Toyota’s sales in China fell 49 per cent in September and were down by nearly the same amount in October. Although the fall was not enough to prompt Toyota to downgrade its profit forecast, the company did reduce its consolidated sales volume estimate by 50,000 vehicles, to 8.75m.
