Earlier this month Mead Johnson Nutrition Co. and other foreign infant-formula manufacturers were falsely accused by a university in central China of selling baby formula containing an unsafe ingredient. The university apologized for misreading test results and for causing a scare among Mead Johnson investors that sent the share price down 4.3%.

In response to the Hunan Ava Dairy problem, citizens on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblogging service, questioned how the products made it to market. 'Shouldn't testing happen before this ever reaches us?' one user wrote. Others circulated a cartoon of a baby being attacked by milk bottles.
