But some sales can be made up later, and the storm will drive purchases of items like plywood and generators that wouldn't otherwise have been sold.

Airlines had canceled a total of more than 14,600 flights as of late Monday, according to the companies and flight-tracking website FlightAware.com, more than the roughly 10,000 total flights cancelled due to Hurricane Irene in 2011.
