Men are disappearing from elementary schools. Two trends are converging (会聚) to lower their representation in classrooms: more women are stepping up to become principals,and fewer men are becoming teachers.In Arizona,almost 60 percent of school principals and nearly 90 percent of teachers are women.Six years ago, the majority of principals were men.Some schools have no men, meaning kids may not have a male teacher or principal until middle or high school.It’s the same picture nationally.Female educators say they are happy that women are finally leading the schools, where they have dominated in the teacher ranks for decades.But they are worried about the fact that there are no men teaching kids to read, to discover the power of gravity or to multiply threedigit numbers.
Children, especially boys, need to view learning as a manly pursuit to reinforce the value of education, educators say.That in turn can promote teaching as a career for boys and benefit all kids by infusing(灌输……于) schools with male role models.
Margaret Serna, principal of Scottsdale’s Tavan Elementary School, cheers the climb by women into school administration. “I see it the advance of women.We’re the CEO,” Serna said.“Women are finally catching up.”But she’s eager to hire a qualified man for her school to add balance to the staff and show children that education is important to both men and women.But where are the men? According to a survey recently conducted by a job organization, two main factors may be driving men out of schools.
