Chinese dairy company Hunan Ava Dairy Industry Co. is recalling some of its infant formula after officials in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou found a carcinogenic toxin in some of the company's products, underscoring China's challenges as it attempts to overhaul its scandal-ridden dairy industry.

The closely held dairy company in central China is pulling from the nation's shop shelves five batches of its formula brand Nanshan Bywise produced between July 2011 and December, a consumer sales and safety representative for Hunan Ava Dairy said Monday. A company spokesman didn't respond to calls for comment.

The five batches contained the cancer-linked chemical aflatoxin, according to an announcement late last week from Guangzhou's Commerce Bureau. Guangzhou officials have launched an investigation and have ordered a municipal recall, according to a statement Friday from the Guangzhou bureau. It didn't identify a source, though it said packaging, pollution or improper storage are often causes. It didn't respond to requests for additional information.
