The bounty is off for China's eager piranha hunters.
Officials in the southern city of Liuzhou have cancelled a 1000-yuan ($157) reward for piranhas caught in a local river after a campaign to hunt down the Amazonian predators led the killing of too many 'innocent' fish, the state-run China Daily reports.
Liuzhou authorities had offered the bounty after two residents reported being attacked by piranhas earlier this month. One of those residents, Zhang Haibo, managed to catch one of the fish that bit him and brought it out for reporters to see.
Observers predicted locals would try to cheat the Liuzhou government by buying fish online where one piranha can be had for around 20 yuan and trying to pass them off as the hand-biters in question. But residents instead appeared to take the hunt with enthusiasm.
