碳卫星经过半年的在轨测试(in-orbit test)后将正式投入运行，每16天对全球二氧化碳水平进行一次检测(examine global CO2 levels every 16 days)，经过2至3个月的数据累计，完成对地球的全覆盖。中国科学技术部国家遥感中心总工程师李加洪表示，碳卫星是为应对全球气候变化(tackle global climate change)、提升中国全球二氧化碳监测能力部署的一项重大任务。碳卫星的发射将填补中国在温室气体监测方面的技术空白，使中国掌握第一手的二氧化碳监测数据(first-hand CO2 monitoring data)。碳卫星有助于提升我国在气候变化、碳减排(carbon emission reduction)、碳交易(carbon trading)方面的话语权。
