In 2010, Huawei was forced to drop a joint bid with Bain Capital for 3Com, the US network equipment maker, after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US raised objections. Last year, it was also forced to drop plans to buy assets from the IT start-up 3Leaf Systems.

Executives from Huawei and ZTE appeared before the House intelligence committee last month in what the Chinese government said was the first time Chinese companies had participated in a US congressional hearing.

Through translators, these executives denied their companies posed a security risk to the US. But committee members said later that their testimony was unconvincing.

Earlier this year, Australia’s federal government blocked Huawei from bidding on the country’s plan to build a new national broadband network because of similar security concerns.
