What Every Single Word underscores is that theroles often available to nonwhite performers — think of the ubiquitous black friend, the Latinawaitress and the Asian storekeeper — are often little more than casting tokenism. I’m not saying that any of these filmmakers are racist. I’m saying that the system thatthey’re contributing has some deeply racist practices.
