Zwika Pres, who co-owns Nanoosh, a chain of Mediterranean restaurants in Manhattan, had to close them Sunday in advance of the storm. Two of his three restaurants lost power, Mr. Pres said, so he spent Wednesday hauling chickpeas and vegetables in his Honda Pilot to his one restaurant with electricity. He still had to throw out thousands of dollars worth of food.

'It's exceeded the worst scenario,' said Mr. Pres, 43, who started his restaurants in 2007. 'You have the hope that everyone is exaggerating just to be safe. But, unfortunately, in this case no one exaggerated.'
